Along with increases in nontraditional student enrollment comes an increasing percentage of working nontraditional college students. Mature-entry students (21 years and above) constitute a notable group within higher education sector. The study used a descriptive survey with a purpose to examine the determinants of academic performance of mature age entry students. The study was conducted among mature age entry students at Kenya Methodist University in Kenya. Proportionate stratified sampling was used to select the 87 subjects. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and chi-square analysis with the help of SPSS. A total of 73 mature age students participated in the study representing a 84% response rate. Majority 47(64%) of the respondents had a GPA between 2.1 and 3.0. Gender (p=0.006), age (p=0.0390 and economic status (p=0.000) were significant. in addition, family commitments (p=0.000), family support (p=0.000), institutional support (p=0.003) and work life balance (p=0.000) were significant. The study concluded that performance is influenced by demographic and social factors. Social factors appeared to have a greater influence than demographic factors where they emerged as barriers to good academic performance. Universities therefore need to tailor programmes to match needs of mature age students.Item Accessibility and Utilization of the Makueni Care Insurance Program in Achieving Uhc in Makueni County(Academic Journal of Health Systems and Reform (AJHSR), 2025-07) Kisilu, Mary Syontheke; Musyoka, Felistus; Ong’ombe, Musa OluochThe purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of accessibility on the utilization of the Makueni Care Insurance Program (MCIP) in achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) in Makueni County, Kenya. Applying ICTs in service delivery has become a game changer in public records management. It has completely transformed records management work procedures, methods, and principles. The study aimed to assess how operational efficiency can be achieved by adopting ICT in diplomatic records management at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kenya. The study was guided by records continuum and hybrid theories and adopted the descriptive survey research design. The target population comprised 887 Ministry of Foreign Affairs employees, from which a sample of 87 participants was selected using a stratified and purposive sampling approach. Questionnaires and interview schedules were used to collect data, which was analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively using Statistical Package for Social Sciences and content analysis. The study revealed that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had embarked on the assimilation of ICTs into its operational activities as a component of e-service delivery. As a result, the study established that diplomatic records, which were vital in achieving operational efficiency, were being created, accessed, and used in electronic format. Inadequate infrastructure for electronic records management programs was, however, found to be a significant hindrance to the realization and use of diplomatic electronic records. The study recommends that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs develop and execute a comprehensive electronic records management policy and regulatory framework to integrate e-records into Ministry's operational efficiency and service delivery. The Ministry of foreign affairs should collaborate with Information Communication and Technologies Authority to develop infrastructure for electronic records management systems to ensure that all software acquired for managing electronic records capture records management requirements to achieve operational efficiency and improved service delivery.Item Adoption of Computerised Health Information System Focusing on Kenya’s Health Facilities(Journal of Biology, Agriculture and Healthcare, 2016) Githiom, Samuel; Muiruri, Lillian; Osuga, BenAlthough the benefits of information technology are clear adapting new information systems to health care has proven difficult globally and rates of use have been limited. With the challenge of inadequate health workers and low quality of service delivery, Information Communication Technology is essential to ensure availability of Information to multiple users and multiple settings. It is also important for Integration of variable types of data media, data legibility, reduced medical errors, complete and quality data. It also enable structured data entry, accurate calculation of processes, provision of tools for decision support and data based analysis. Although Kenya as a developing country has invested in Information Communication Technology with the aim of improving patient care, all indications have shown slow adoption of technology in healthcare industry. Therefore it is important to focus on means of hastening adoption of HIS in order to enhance service delivery in the health sector and hence effective service delivery for Kenyan peopleItem Adoption of Paperless Communication in Promoting Environmental Sustainability: Insights from Marsabit County Teaching & Referral Hospital, Kenya(Journal of Information and Technology, 2025-09) Diba, Bilinga Kosi; Paul, Gichohi Maku; Edith, MurugiThis study examined the adoption of paperless communication as an eco-friendly practice for promoting environmental sustainability at Marsabit County Teaching and Referral Hospital (MCTRH), Kenya. The study is guided by the Green Information Technology (Green IT) Theory, which emphasizes sustainable ICT practices across their life cycle to promote eco- friendly digital records management and environmental sustainability. A descriptive survey design was employed, targeting hospital staff. Structured questionnaires were administered to 117 respondents, supplemented with key informant interviews picked using stratified random and purposive sampling, respectively, that ensured representation across departments. Validity of the instruments was established through expert review, while reliability was confirmed with Cronbach’s alpha values above 0.7. Ethical approval was granted, and informed consent was obtained from participants. Out of the 117 targeted respondents, 114 returned completed questionnaires, yielding a 97% response rate. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics (frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations), while qualitative insights were thematically analyzed. The results show that respondents strongly acknowledged the role of paperless communication in reducing paper usage, streamlining workflows, and enhancing accessibility. Nevertheless, challenges such as limited ICT infrastructure, inadequate digital literacy, and unstable internet connectivity were identified as barriers to effective adoption. These findings corroborate recent studies highlighting that digital tools reduce environmental footprints while improving operational efficiency. The study concludes that paperless communication holds significant potential for advancing environmental sustainability at MCTRH but requires deliberate support. It recommends the hospital administration to prioritize ICT infrastructure investments, institutionalize policies on paperless communication, and provide regular staff training. Such efforts would enhance both operational efficiency and environmental sustainability outcomes.Item Aflatoxin Analysis in Staple Food Cereals and Assessment of Households’ Awareness on its Management in Tharaka-Nithi County, Kenya(International Journal of professional Practice (IJPP), 2020) Marangu, Victor Mwiti; Gisemba, Beatrice; Juma, RoseAflatoxins are naturally occurring harmful toxins produced by the fungi Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus. Aflatoxin contamination is a cross-boundary and multifaceted problem that requires participation and involvement of both private and public stakeholders. Agriculture is the main economic activity of Tharaka-Nithi County, yet it is among the hot spots of aflatoxin in Kenya. The county is extremely vulnerable to climate-related risks; however, there is lack of local data on aflatoxin contamination to inform interventions chiefly due to lack of local research, testing facilities, and qualified personnel. The main purpose of this study was to analyze cereals used as staple foods for aflatoxin contamination and to evaluate households’ awareness on the overall management of aflatoxin, and identify factors contributing to aflatoxin contamination. Eighty one samples were collected and laboratory analysis conducted using ELISA Kit. Aflatoxin levels in 25.8% of samples was above the Kenyan standards of 10ppb with 17.2% exceeding 20ppb. Aflatoxin levels in 44.4% of market samples exceeded 10ppb. The level of aflatoxin contamination was associated with the type of cereals and grains (p<0.05). There was no difference in mean level of aflatoxin in cereals from the study areas (p>0.05). Furthermore, there was no difference in mean level of aflatoxin in the cereals and grains collected from the markets and households (p>0.05). Majority of the farmers (84.7%) were aware of aflatoxin. However, detailed information on its management was scanty and inconsistent. Awareness creation on aflatoxin contamination to all stakeholders in the cereals value chains is needed for their concerted efforts in its control. Recognition of these barriers together with the opportunities for aflatoxin containment, the researcher hoped to improve the knowledge on aflatoxin management, health, and economic well-being of households and by extension the national food security.Item African Culture & the Girl-Child Education: The Case of Ilchamus community, Baringo County, Kenya(Jumuga Journal of Education, Oral Studies, and Human Sciences (JJEOSHS), 2024) Rebecca, Lempassy Lemelwai; Lucy, Ikiara Kanyiri; Clement, NkaabuThis research article underscores the cultural factors that influence girl-child education among the Ilchamus community. Various literatures were reviewed and gaps were successfully identified. It embraces descriptive research design. It utilises purposive and snowballing techniques since the initial research that culminated into an article was basically a mixed research. The sample size of the study was 350 respondents. It establishes that; the practice of female genital mutilation (FGM), often linked with traditional rites of passage, is typically followed by early marriage, which disrupts girls’ education. Additionally, early marriage typically curtails educational opportunities for girls, as they are often expected to take on domestic responsibilities and childbearing, leaving little room for schooling. In this regard, it concludes that; cultural practices like FGM and early marriages are deeply rooted barriers to girl-child education in the Ilchamus community, while the role of parents’ education and cultural transitions reflect more nuanced influences on educational outcomes.Item Agency Banking Strategy and Performance of Commercial Banks of Tier Three Banks in Kenya(Academic Journal of Social Sciences and Education, 2025) Kinyua, Robert Muchiri; Kihara, Peter; Milui, JoshuaThe performance of commercial banks in Kenya has increasingly been influenced by the adoption and utilization of agency banking, which plays a pivotal role in enhancing operational efficiency, customer engagement, and overall bank performance. In view of this fact, loans to directors and staff are viewed as a factor which can greatly influence savings and credit cooperatives into either falling into financial distress or helping them to remain a float and become financially stable entities. The stakeholder theory holds that entities should be managed a manner that will satisfy every stakeholder. The stewardship theory reiterates that managers have the organisation at heart and can it to profitability as if it were their own. However approval of loans and other transactions to managers and staff, may not positively impact the entity. This study was designed to establish the effect of related party transactions on the relationship between board characteristics and financial distress of deposit taking SACCOs in Nairobi County. We applied Descriptive research design on Deposit taking SACCOs in Nairobi County which was identified purposively while a census was conceded for all deposit taking SACCOs in the county. We obtained secondary data from SASRA using a data collection sheet after which we performed panel data analysis by use of STATA software. Findings were presented using tables. The study concluded that related party transactions influenced the relationship between board characteristics and financial distress of Deposit Taking SACCOs in Nairobi County. Related party transactions can be an avenue of causing financial distress and should be kept as low as possible. The regulator should come up with a tool based on Altman’s Z score models to predict financial distress in SACCOs in order to offer timely advice to alleviate more distress and consequent bankruptcy which may lead to closure of SACCOs. Another research may be carried out to establish other factors causing financial distress and how to turn around the SACCOs already in distress.Item Analyzing the Course of Turmoil in Kenya’S Retail Sector(THE INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF BUSINESS & MANAGEMENT, 2018-08) Chesula, Osman Wechuli; Nkobe, Kenyoru DennisPurpose - The retail sector in Kenya is one of the main drivers of the Economy.
