Factors Influencing use of Open Access Repository: A Case of Kenya Methodist University
    (KeMU, 2017-09) Mwiti, Faith Mwendwa
Institutional repositories (IR) are one of the innovations adopted by academic libraries to embrace the open access initiatives that advocate for free online access of scholarly research. Globally academic institutions are using Institutional repositories (IRs) as channels for capturing, archiving and disseminating their scholarly works. As (IRs) matures they encounter difficulties on how to of how to improve their operations to proliferate the number and variety of content archived. This study investigated factors influencing the use of KeMU institutional repository as a tool for enhancing open access. The specific objectives that guided the study were to: Examine Institutional Repository and Open Access concepts awareness level among the academic staff at KeMU; Assess to what extent do the library staff advocates the use of KeMU IR as a tool for enhancing Open Access; Explore how user perception on open access publications influence the use of KeMU repository; Examine factors deterring content submission by academic and library staff to the KeMU Institutional repository. The study adopted both Innovation Diffusion Theory (IDT) and social exchange theory and, employed a quantitative research design and probability sampling techniques. The study population constituted 130 respondents and a sample of 98 was drawn using Yamane formula to calculate sample size for proportions. Data was collected using a questionnaire. The response rate was 84%. Data analysis was carried out descriptively using statistical package for social science (SPSS) version 20 and presented in form of tables and figures. The study found out that low levels of awareness on IR concept, lack of enthusiasm in advocating for the use of an institution repository, the negative perception towards the content submitted in an institution repository as well as lack of awareness on the benefits associated with submitting articles in a repository are some of the factors hindering use of KeMU repository. The study concluded that for KeMU repository to be vibrant in enabling open access of scholarly work, there should be a well laid out advocacy program to address issues relating the existence of KeMU institution repository and the importance of submitting research works in the repository. The study recommends senior university managers be sensitized on the importance of IR and why they should play a proactive role in enhancing use of the KeMU repository.

The Role of Digitization in the Preservation of Corporate Archives at Kenya Power and Lighting Company
(Kenya Methodist University, 2019-08-01) Ronoh, Elvis Kipngenoh
Records in digital format are becoming more influential in governance and operations of both corporate and government as many organizations embark on electronic commerce (e)-strategies. The use of information and telecommunications technologies (ICTs) in preservation at KPLC has resulted in the creation and use of digital records. This strategy is believed to increase the efficiency of the internal processes such as those supporting financial and human resources management. Because of the speed of technological change, organizations have to consider issues of preservation of their digital archives even while they are still in active use and needed for posterity. Digital records being preserved by the organization must be accurate and complete to ensure transparency and accountability. Records in whatever form need to be captured, managed and safeguarded in an organized system in order to retain their value as formal corporate records. The aim of the study was to investigate the role of digitization in the preservation of corporate archives at Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC). The specific objectives of this study were to; determine the accessibility of the digitally preserved archives at KPLC, find out the policies relating to digital preservation of archives at KPLC, analyze security threats related to digital preservation of archives at KPLC and to explore the challenges of digital preservation of archives at KPLC. The theoretical framework focused on Open Archival Information System. The research adopted a descriptive research design. A mixed method approach was used to incorporate both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies which gave a better understanding of the research problem. The target population comprised of 74 participants. The study employed census sampling technique. Semi structured questionnaire were used as the main data collection instrument and analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS 23). Pilot study was administered to test the success of the study over the prevailing circumstance. Pearson correlation and linear regression was used to test the relationship between variables in the study hypothesis. Analyzed data was presented descriptively using tables, graphs and pie charts. The results of the study indicated that KPLC is open to preservation digital records hence embracing the various formats for preservation. The study found out that KPLC appreciate records as key drivers in various business activities hence the diverse access provision. KPLC provided three kind of access to digital archive services which included full access, partial access and no access were allowed on some of digital records. The findings established that KPLC had policies related to Digital Records Management (DRM). Among the policies set up by KPLC to regulate the preservation of digital archives included; authorization, staff development, application of latest technology in preservation of information and regulatory compliance policy. Also, the study revealed that KPLC had proper procedures and mechanism in place to ensure security, long term preservation and accessibility of digital records. Technical measures to prevent unauthorized access included: data and database security, procedural security, system security and data back-up. Finally, the challenges surrounding digital preservation of archives included inadequate funding, obsolete hardware and software, insufficient ICT facilities, fragile storage media, inadequate expertise and shortage of DRM Skills. The study recommended that; KPLC should adopt new communication technologies (face book, twitter and blogs), undertake capacity building by developing a detailed training plan and finally KPLC should have a detailed budget process since adoption of ICTs requires huge capital for purchase of computers, software and training of staff.

Factors Influencing Implementation of ICT Systems in Public Secondary Schools in Thika.
    (KeMU, 2016-06) Mwangi, Samuel Waweru
This thesis sought to investigate factors influencing implementation of ICT systems in Thika West public secondary schools. This would help to improve quality of education in terms of learning materials utilization in public secondary schools. Both qualitative and quantitative research designs were used. The study targeted a population of 840 teachers of public secondary schools with a sample size of 84 respondents. Questionnaires were used for collecting data. The data collected was then checked for errors, coded and then analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, specifically regression model as it enables to show the relationship between the independent variables (uses of ICT systems, implementation process, ICTs policies and ICT systems infrastructure) and dependent.variable (implementation of ICT systems) with the aid of Scientific Package for Social Studies. Also qualitative data were analyzed. Understanding the factors influencing teachers on effective use of ICT systems in teaching in secondary schools was important as it would provide the entire education cycle with information regarding the implementation and use of ICT systems in public secondary schools in Thika Region in Kiambu County. Based on the findings of the research it was clear that there were a number of factors influencing implementation of ICT systems in public secondary schools in Thika. The study concluded that efforts by the Ministry of Education to sustain ICT systems implementation in schools are very minimal especially in the rural area in Thika West. From the findings the researcher recommended that the government should put measures on how ICT systems are to being integrated and implemented in Thika West public secondary schools.

Effects of Information Literacy Skills on the Utilization of Library Resources in Academic Libraries in Kenya.
    (KeMU, 2016-06) Madete, Stella Migide
Information literate students' access, retrieve, evaluate and put into use information from different sources. They communicate effectively and efficiently and reflect on the process as well as the product. However, students in most universities depend heavily on their lecture notes and library assistants to seek information despite having been taught information literacy skills during their fast year in the university (Kavulya, 2003). One is thus led to ask the question: Why are students not performing as expected regarding the application of information literacy skills? Therefore, the study sought to investigate the impact of information literacy programs on utilization of library resources at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, Mombasa Campus. The specific objectives of the study were to: find out the levels of information literacy skills among students; identify the role of libraries in the integration of information literacy programs; establish the methods used in the provision of an information literacy programs; and to find out the students' perceptions on information literacy programs. The study adopted the seven ways or faces of information literacy model by Bruce (1997). This study employed the descriptive and explanatory research designs. The study employed both non probability and probability sampling techniques. The study sample was stratified according to the level of education of the respondents and convenience sampling was used in administering the questionnaires. The study sample comprised 335 users and 2 librarians who were selected using purposive sampling.Data was analyzed descriptively using SPSS 23 and presented in form of tables and figures. The findings of the study showed that the majority of the respondents understood the meaning of information literacy, they used the OPAC system and E-resources to locate, access, retrieve and effectively use the information acquit ed. The methods employed in the teaching information literacy skills included carrying out annual orientation programs for new students, organizing library workshops and demonstrations. However, it was evident that majority of library users lacked information searching and retrieval skills and this was due to the fact that they did not undergo a well-organized information literacy program, and that university students rely heavily on the internet for their academic work or research. The study concluded that although there have been efforts to ensure information literacy among university students, there is need to build on these efforts through collaborative efforts between librarians and faculty members particularly through joint curriculum design and implementation. There are some forms of information literacy training in the institution, however the training offered was not adequate to promote lifelong learning due to lack of standardized information literacy programs and lack of information literacy policies. The fmdings of the study will be significant to the policy makers by helping them to make sound policies that will enhance the development of information literacy skills among university students. Various methods should be used for teaching and assessing the information literacy skills of the students, which includes: one-on-one instruction, interactive classes, online tutorials, as well as building assignments around research situations. Lecturers should also be encouraged to use e-library resources and computers as well as the Internet and online searching skills as part of the students' assignments.

    (2016-06) Mwaniki, Grace Njoki
With the advent of information technologies, the variety of ways that information can be created, stored and manipulated has greatly increased in comparison to the days when information was produced almost solely through the medium of paper. The aim of this study was to examine the adoption of electronic records for service delivery at the Kenya Police Service. The objectives of the study were: to examine the status of records management in the Kenya Police Service; the availability of ICT infrastructure to facilitate e-records management; the financial support provided for the adoption of e-record management and the skills of personnel at Kenya Police Service in e-record management. The theoretical literature focused on Technology Acceptance Model. The study adopted a survey research design and the target population comprised of 616 officers from 29 police stations in Nairobi, Kenya. Data was collected using questionnaires and an interview guide. A total of 112 questionnaires were returned resulting in a response rate of 86.8%. The study used both probability sampling technique (stratified random sampling) and non-probability sampling techniques -. (purposive sampling and convenience sampling). The study collected both qualitative 7 X and quantitative data hence the use of mixed method. The" quantitative data from questionnaires was analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis and regression analysis. The qualitative data was analyzed using content analysis. The study established that Kenya Police Service mainly used manual record keeping systems and the institution was not prepared for the adoption of electronic records management as a tool to enhance efficiency in service delivery. The study recommends that the Kenya Government and the Kenya Police Service should come up With a strategic plan that would guide automation of record keeping systems, allocate sufficient funds to support acquisition of ICT infrastructure for e-records, staff training and
