dc.description.abstractTetu District financing of schools is a major problem and yet the district has many potential income generating opportunities at its disposal. The purpose of the study was to investigate the alternative sources of funding in public primary schools in Tetu District in Nyeri County. It aimed at establishing activities through which the schools may improve - °"IT financial resource base so as to be in a position to offer better quality teaching that . • result into improving output in terms of the pupils they produce. In this regards, the study examined literature relating to the financing of education in general and alternative sources of funds in particular. The review outlined the theoretical basis of the study and gave literature on sources of funding for primary schools. In addition the review gave literature related to problems encountered in financing education in Kenya. A conceptual framework was developed to show the relationship between various variables. This study has employed a descriptive survey design. The study adopted a purposive sampling technique where 18 head teachers, 72 teachers and 65 committee members responded. Questionnaires and observation schedules were the instruments used in the collection of data. The data was analyzed by use of statistical package of social sciences (SPSS) computer package. The study found that coffee farming, tea plantation, trees, shamba rent, Napier grass and rabbit keeping were the main income generating projects. The researcher recommends establishment of fish project and pig keeping in order to generate more funds.en_US
